Project Proposal

General Topic: UCSB Bucket List

Audience

My target audience will be currently enrolled UCSB students. Specifically, new students like first years and transfers. This audience will mostly consist of young adults with a variety of genders, ethnicities and nationalities around 18-22 years old who come from a middle to upper class background. Considering this, they will probably have minimal knowledge about the school and surrounding areas. However, this audience values knowledge, new experiences, open-mindedness, and community since they chose to attend a highly-ranked university with a social reputation. Therefore, they should be eager to view my website, learn about the area, and partake in the activities listed. I will make sure to be specific when talking about locality (ie IV will be stated as Isla Vista), include relevant information to help the audience understand what they are participating in, and voice opinions from other students that have participated in the activities in order to cater to their backgrounds and values. A secondary audience that could benefit from my website are new graduate students, or tourists.

Purpose

I want my website to encourage UCSB students to get involved with the many opportunities that the area has to offer by providing an easy, one-spot reference for activities in the form of a bucket list. I also want it to inform students about the history of specific locations, activities, and more so they can learn more about the school they are attending. Finally, I want it to strengthen the sense of community by including the opinions and experiences of other students. Our school is in an amazing location, and I believe that all students should take advantage of this in order to make the process of adjusting easier as well as make the most of their time as UCSB students. For me, getting involved and socializing helped me feel more at home here. Therefore, it is important that I approach this with an encouraging, friendly, and excited attitude. The website should be fun, but also welcoming and comfortable since students are getting to know their way.

Text

My website will include different sections for activities, events, and locations that are applicable to either UCSB, Goleta, or Santa Barbara. There will also be a section for general activities that can be done in the area, such as surfing. The information will be styled into a scrollable list to mimic a bucket list. Each listing will include pictures and/or videos in order to display visual information and background. Each listing will also include text in order to expand upon the visuals as well as include student opinions and experiences. Student opinions and experiences may be included in audio clippings as well. Some listings will include links if necessary, such as for buying tickets or booking an appointment. To create a fun atmosphere, there may be some animations for the texts, photos, etc.

Setting

Ideally, this website will circulate in the Isla Vista/Goleta/Santa Barbara area since it is catered to students that go to UCSB. Community-wise, I am hoping that it is shared among UCSB students and anyone who is interested in partaking in activities in the area while visiting, such as friends from other schools. This bucket list website could be used by current students to find things to do, learn more about their school and area, and build relationships. Future students could use it for the same reasons, as well as a way to conserve the history of UCSB culture.
